Saturday, Aug. 7th, leaving on Sunday, Aug. 8th.
On our last full day at Rafter J Campground outside of Hill City, we road the steam train from Hill City to Keystone, drove around Needles Highway in Custer State Park, caught a glimpse of Mount Rushmore from Needles Highway, and went to the Mount Rushmore night program. We didn’t take any pictures of our favorite spot on Needles Highway—Thread the Needle—since there were so many motorcyles parked there and so many people walking around that we couldn’t even stop our car.
On our last morning, we enjoyed the pancake breakfast at our campground.
When we were making our reservations for Rafter J (were we had stayed two years ago), we were thinking that we had stayed in the Mt. Rushmore KOA. So, we tried to make reservations there. Since they were full, we made reservations at Rafter J. Then, by looking back at our blog from two years ago, we realized that Rafter J was the name of the campground where we had stayed—and where we were trying to stay again. Had the KOA not been full, we would have been upset that we had gotten into the wrong campground.
