A Road Trip to Spearfish Canyon, Deadwood, Sturgis….and then Back to Hill City

Friday, August 6th

We arrived at Rafter J RV park outside of Hill City around 6:00 p.m. We stayed at this park two years ago and had liked it. So, we decided to stop by again. We were in a different part of the park this time and couldn’t get on the Internet, which was very frustrating. So, the first morning in our new location found us in town at a coffee shop so we could use the Internet.

Once we were finished talking to our students, we took one of the road trips that the bikers go on—to Spearfish Canyon, Deadwood, Sturgis, and back to Hill City. The scenery was gorgeous, and there were bikers everywhere—along the way and in each of the small towns. Along the way, we encountered a large bust of Abraham Lincoln outside the gates of a closed park that had a sign indicating the park included busts of about 40 U.S. Presidents. Unfortunately, since the park was closed and gated, all we saw was Lincoln.

Once we arrived back in Hill City, we went to the Alpine Inn for steaks. The restaurant has great prices on steak, but virtually no options. We had a choice of a large or small steak. With that comes a baked potato and a wedge salad with ranch dressing. The place is always packed with a long wait list. We were lucky to arrive just as the first seating list was closing and there was room for two, so we walked right in. We knew we were lucky since we had gong to this same place two years ago and knew about the long waits.

After dinner, we walked around Hill City a little bit. We enjoyed the Horse Sculpture made from all kinds of metal things.

  1. Hi
It is fun to see you going to all these places that we were just at about 6 weeks ago. Too bad our paths couldn't have crossed!!
It looks like you are sitting at the same picnic table at the train in Hill City that we did. And with a cooler just like ours--funny coincidences!!
